I was browsing the news this morning and came across an article about the rising rate of burnout in the nursing profession. I thought of those who have taken up this profession and dedicate their lives to caring for us. I have family and friends who are nurses and am incredibly grateful for their commitment and dedication to what I can only imagine is a tireless, stressful job. I can’t imagine how hard it’s been for them over the past few years as COVID-19 spread around the world and through our communities.

This story reminded me that the way in which we check in with each other makes a big difference how we manage our well-being. Asking the open ended question “how are you doing?” and allowing time for a thoughtful answer not only translates to empathy and caring, it opens the door for more genuine and constructive conversation. So rather than leading someone to a positive response (i.e., “are you doing well?”), try asking an open ended question instead.
